City Market lies at the center of Kansas City’s River Market neighborhood. On the banks of The Missouri River, the area was one of the first established as our city was settled, originally called “Westport Landing”. Naturally, these early residents needed a place to buy, sell, and trade goods, and what they started, originally called “Market Square” has continued for over 160 years.
Historic brick buildings (built with New Deal dollars) with anchor tenant shops and restaurants surround a courtyard style open air market which on Spring, Summer, and Fall weekends transforms into the region’s largest farmers market. Over 150 vendors set up shop, selling everything from fresh fruit and wildflower bouquets, to local honey and freshly ground spices. With 600,000 annual visitors The City Market is a vibrant scene and a cherished Kansas City tradition.
